The program

The work is not primarily about institutions. It is about the compatibility between civilization and the kind of creatures we are.

This site is the home of a research program that investigates how modern sociotechnical systems distribute, conceal, and normalize human burden.

Where much contemporary ethics focuses on intentions, rights, incentives, or outcomes, this work treats moral experience as an emergent property of system architecture. The central claim is that institutions are not merely mechanisms for coordinating action but environments that determine what kinds of persons can exist within them.

The task of design, therefore, is not only to produce efficient or just outcomes, but to preserve the conditions under which finite human beings can continue to inhabit their own lives.

What the program studies

The central hypothesis is that modern organizations increasingly optimize for system continuity by converting human beings into adaptive buffers for organizational brittleness. This dynamic appears across healthcare, digital platforms, AI governance, labor systems, finance, public administration, and state institutions.

Rather than evaluating institutions primarily by outputs such as accuracy, throughput, or aggregate welfare, the program develops a complementary framework centered on load distribution, maintainability, repairability, and the lived experience of navigating institutional processes.

The program introduces a growing conceptual vocabulary including human crumple zones, structural maintenance, standing, pending, institutional apoptosis, counterfeit reassurance, cognitive scarcity, uninhabitable acts, and incidence versus suffering to describe recurring failure modes that conventional metrics inadequately capture.

Conceptually, the project seeks to reorient systems thinking away from optimization and toward institutional habitability. Instead of asking whether a system performs efficiently under ideal assumptions, it asks whether ordinary people remain capable of participating in it without chronic exhaustion, procedural humiliation, or becoming permanent shock absorbers for organizational failure.

Where does institutional load actually go?

Every optimization redistributes rather than eliminates burden. The research traces where time, uncertainty, emotional labor, administrative work, and risk ultimately accumulate.

What forms of maintenance make systems genuinely inhabitable?

Rather than equating maintenance with preserving existing institutions, the work distinguishes maintenance that sustains human capability from maintenance that merely prolongs institutional continuity.

How should systems be evaluated from the perspective of the people required to live inside them?

Evaluation should extend beyond aggregate outcomes to include repair latency, enforceable obligation, cognitive demand, reversibility, recoverability, and the distribution of error over time.

My research develops a systems theory of institutional life. I study how technological and administrative systems organize human experience by distributing maintenance, failure, and obligation. Bringing together systems engineering, safety science, philosophy of technology, and political theory, I investigate what makes institutions not merely efficient, but inhabitable capable of supporting human flourishing under the ordinary conditions of finite attention, vulnerability, and interdependence.

The broader aim is to articulate principles for designing systems that remain accountable to human limitations rather than treating them as sources of compensatory resilience.
