Institutional language

What they mean when they say it

The phrases institutions use, and what each one does. Every entry names the mechanism it serves, with a checklist for telling whether you are inside it, and the essay that is its evidence. The archive's own terms are in the glossary on Start here.

77 phrases and terms, grouped by the pattern they serve.

Burden

Measures where failure is routed: the fallout, upkeep, translation, and repair a system moves onto its edges so the center can keep calling itself orderly.

Care theater

Measures whether concern changes material conditions or only manages optics: the difference between support and its performance, reassurance, and institutional self-image.

Conditional authority

Measures what can end authority: whether justification travels with power, whether it has to be renewed on stated terms, whether power stops when the justification fails, and whether the people it governs can take it back.

Delay

Measures who pays for a system’s time: review, waiting, repeated proof, and “still in process” as the machinery for sorting people without a clean no.

Infrastructural power

Measures how coercion stops needing commands: power hardened into defaults, categories, interfaces, and mid-level systems until it reads as ordinary background reality.

Legitimacy

Measures what the surface lets through: charisma, acknowledgment, and interpretive smoothing that decide which evidence reaches the institution and which feelings keep power likable, plausible, or hard to contest.

Reversibility

Measures whether a system can stop itself: the stopping points, rollback paths, and repair obligations that decide who is left absorbing irreversible loss.

Survivability

Measures what exercising an option costs the person using it: whether someone can act, refuse, stay intact, and still belong afterward.
